1994 - Strike!

The eighth work stoppage in Major League Baseball history begins when the players walk off the job. The 232-day strike, which lasts from Aug. 12, 1994 to April 2, 1995, leads to the cancellation of over 930 games, including the entire 1994 postseason.

The World Series is cancelled for the first time since 1904.

Matt Williams doesn't get an opportunity to break Roger Maris' home run record (he had 43 with 47 games to play). Bob Welch and Lloyd McClendon are among 19 players who never played another big league game after last night. The Montreal Expos, who lead the NL East with a 74-40 record, never have a shot at a postseason run.

1974 - Ryan strikes out 19

California Angels right-hander Nolan Ryan strikes out 19 batters in a 4-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox. It's the second of three 19-K outings for the hurler this season.

1964 - Mantle strikes from both sides of the plate

New York Yankees' Mickey Mantle sets the 10th major league record of his career when he hits home runs from both sides of the plate in a single game against the Chicago White Sox.

His first homer, a left-batting effort, is off Ray Herbert. He added a second shot, hitting right-handed, to give rookie pitcher Mel Stottlemyre a 7-3 victory in his MLB debut.
