Dodgers' Frias to make 1st-career start Wednesday vs. Nationals

With his team holding a slim two-game division lead over the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers rookie right-hander Carlos Frias will make his first big-league start on Wednesday.

Frias has logged 14 1/3 innings of work out of the bullpen this season, and despite allowing nine runs over that time, manager Don Mattingly believes he's a better option against the Washington Nationals than Kevin Correia.

"We feel like he's been throwing the ball good," Mattingly told Michael Lananna of MLB.com. "We can't say he matches up because he hasn't seen these guys, but we felt like his stuff is power stuff. Kevin is not really a great matchup if you look at the numbers."

The 24-year-old Frias made 15 starts with Triple-A Albuquerque this season, posting an 8-4 record with a 5.01 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over 91 2/3 innings.
