Report: Dustin Pedroia to undergo season-ending surgery on hand
Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia will reportedly undergo season-ending surgery on his left hand Thursday, according to Comcast SportsNet's Sean McAdam.
"Yeah he's going to have a procedure done here tomorrow by Dr. [Matthew] Leibman in Boston that will address what he's dealing with right now," Red Sox manager John Farrell said Wednesday, according to MLB.com. "I don't know any more specifics than that, but there will certainly be a followup after that's completed tomorrow."
Pedroia has been slowed by injuries to his left wrist and surgically-repaired thumb this season, producing career lows offensively for the last-place Red Sox.
On Tuesday, Pedroia told WEEI's Alex Speier that surgery will likely correct the issues that have zapped his power and hindered his performance at the plate:
If there was a surgery it wouldn’t be major. You know what I mean? It’s one of those things that’s kind of a release or something to get the inflammation out of there. If that were the case, I’d have a normal offseason and be able to lift weights, something that I didn’t get a chance to do very much last offseason.
[...]
You don’t have your hand strength. You’re not able to follow through the way you normally do. That makes it tough.
Pedroia, 31, is owed an additional $96.5 million through 2021.
