VIDEO: Brewers' Lucroy sets major-league record for doubles by a catcher

Jonathan Lucroy's MVP-type season just became record-setting.

Lucroy's fifth-inning RBI double off Chicago Cubs left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada gave him 46 on the season as a catcher - and 53 overall - to establish a new record for major-league backstops.

The double also tied the Milwaukee Brewers' record for most in a season (Lyle Overbay, 2004) and makes Lucroy the first catcher to ever lead the league in doubles. Six of Lucroy's 53 doubles occurred while playing first base, and he collected one serving as the club's designated hitter during interleague play.

Lucroy's mark tops the previous high set by Texas Rangers catcher Ivan Rodriguez in 1996.

The 28-year-old Lucroy entered Saturday's contest the league leader among qualified catchers in runs (73), stolen bases (4), walk rate (10.2 percent), walks (66), hits (171) and on-base percentage (.369).
