Giants' Peavy to start Game 1 of NLDS vs. Nationals
Just minutes after the San Francisco Giants' 8-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the National League wild-card game, winning pitcher Madison Bumgarner leaked the team's planned starters for the first two games of the National League Division Series.
The lefty, who tossed a complete-game shutout to lift the Giants into the next round, revealed to reporters that Jake Peavy and "Huddy" - presumably Tim Hudson - were up next against the Washington Nationals. Manager Bruce Bochy confirmed the news in a later interview.
Peavy has hit his stride since being acquired by the Giants via the Boston Red Sox on July 26, posting a 6-4 record with a 2.17 ERA. He had an ugly 4.72 ERA in 20 previous starts with the Red Sox.
Hudson is trending in the opposite direction, however, posting a lofty 8.72 ERA in September while dealing with a minor hip injury. He allowed 21 earned runs in 21 2/3 innings pitched that month, but does boast a ton of playoff experience. The righty will be making his 10th postseason start, with just one win to his credit despite a respectable 3.46 ERA.
The Washington Nationals haven't officially announced their rotation plans, but it's probably safe to assume Stephen Strasburg will get the ball for Game 1 opposite Peavy. Jordan Zimmermann is fresh off a no-hitter on the final day of the regular season and could be a strong candidate to oppose Hudson in Game 2.
