Murphy, who is owed $8 million in 2015, has been the subject of trade rumors since July's trade deadline.
The Mets made an early splash in the free-agent market by signing outfielder Michael Cuddyer to a two-year deal - a clear sign the team intends to contend in the National League East next season. The team has also made it clear it's seeking an upgrade at the shortstop position this offseason.
Murphy hit .289 with nine home runs and 57 RBIs in 143 games for New York in 2014.
