Zimmermann rewards Souza's no-hitter catch with Best Buy gift card
The cost of a no-hitter is apparently worth a gift card to a big box electronics store.
That's how Washington Nationals starter Jordan Zimmermann repaid Steven Souza Jr. for his game-ending catch on the final day of the regular season. Souza's ninth-inning heroics secured Zimmermann his first career no-hitter and the outfielder a shopping spree at Best Buy.
"I cannot disclose the amount," Souza told Bill Ladson from MLB.com on Wednesday. "He gave a gift certificate to help me out for my house. It was very thoughtful."
Souza entered the game as a defensive replacement for left fielder Ryan Zimmerman in a move that paid immediate dividends. With two outs in the ninth, Souza made an incredible diving catch to rob Christian Yelich of the Miami Marlins' first hit of the day.
"The catch, I get asked about it almost every time I see someone in a baseball environment," Souza said. "It was just an awesome moment for our team, mostly for Jordan. It capped off such an amazing year. It's one thing I will never forget."
