Report: Braves, Astros discussed potential trade involving Gattis on multiple occasions
Add the Houston Astros to the list of teams interested in Atlanta Braves catcher Evan Gattis.
The Braves and Astros have talked about a potential deal for Gattis on at least two occasions, reported FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.
The first time was last summer, according to Rosenthal's major-league sources. The Braves were interested in outfielder Dexter Fowler, a pitching prospect and also catcher Carlos Corporan. But there was a catch: the Braves wanted to unload B.J. Upton and his expensive contract on the Astros as part of any potential deal.
Rosenthal's sources said the Astros weren't willing to take on an additional $39 million in payroll - the difference between Upton's remaining $46.35 million on his deal and Fowler's $7.35 million.
The Astros still have interest in Gattis, who is four years away from becoming a free agent, and talks could be revived at the upcoming winter meetings, Rosenthal noted.
Gattis has been the subject of multiple trade rumors this offseason, primarily involving the Miami Marlins and Oakland Athletics.
