Report: Edinson Volquez agrees to terms on 2-year, $20-million deal with Royals
The Kansas City Royals' busy offseason continued Wednesday.
Right-hander Edinson Volquez agreed to a two-year, $20-million deal with the Royals, according to Jon Heyman of CBS.
The 31-year-old Volquez made 31 starts for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2014, putting up a career-best 3.04 ERA over 192 2/3 innings. He was especially strong in the second half of the season, accumulating a 2.20 ERA in 13 starts, while striking out 7.4 batters per nine innings.
Volquez has bounced around since making his debut with the Texas Rangers in 2005. The Dominican Republic native was dealt to the Reds in December 2007 for outfielder Josh Hamilton, and made his lone All-Star appearance with Cincinnati in 2008. His major league stops also include stints with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres.
Kansas City signed outfielder Alex Rios to a one-year, $11-million deal earlier in the week, and also brought in designated hitter Kendrys Morales on a two-year, $17-million pact.
Volquez will join a Royals rotation likely to lose ace James Shields to free agency.
