Red Sox GM on rotation: 'We feel very good if we open the season with the guys we have'
Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington added Wade Miley, Rick Porcello and Justin Masterson to his team's lackluster rotation in recent weeks, but appears to be done tinkering with his starting corps for the winter.
Cherington indicated on Saturday that he's content with the rotation tentatively lined up for 2015, while noting that he's "not actively engaged with anything right now" in terms of trades or free agents.
"We would feel really good if that's how we opened up," Cherington told MLB.com's Gordon Edes. "You never close your eyes to opportunities. We're not actively engaged with anything right now and we feel very good if we open the season with the guys we have.
"As I've mentioned before, we don't look at just those five guys. We think we're pretty well set up with young pitching behind those five guys we've mentioned. Rotations are rarely static... but if things happened, we feel we have the depth to deal with that. We'll keep an open mind."
Despite the club's inability to sign left-hander Jon Lester earlier this offseason, Cherington doesn't appear inclined to broker a trade for either Cole Hamels or Johnny Cueto, nor pursue free agents like Max Scherzer or James Shields.
