The versatility of retired infielder Jamey Carroll apparently knows no bounds, as the former MLB journeyman joined the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday as a special assistant to the baseball operations staff.

Carroll is poised to assume a job in the Pirates' front office barely one year after signing a minor-league contract with the Washington Nationals that never really materialized. The 40-year-old was released by the club at the end of spring training.

Carroll spent time with six different clubs throughout his career, relying on his defensive versatility and on-base skills as he meandered through a fine 12-year stint in the major leagues. Throughout stops with the Montreal Expos (and Nationals), Colorado Rockies, Cleveland Indians, Los Angeles Dodgers, Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals, the diminutive infielder hit .272/.349/.338 with a 9.7-percent walk rate in 1,276 games.
