The San Diego Padres reportedly shored up their middle infield for the next couple of seasons on Friday, agreeing to a two-year, $2.5-million deal with shortstop Alexi Amarista, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.
Amarista logged considerable time at four positions last season, but will likely assume an everyday role at shortstop in 2015 after the Padres non-tendered Everth Cabrera earlier this offseason.
Amarista, who turns 26 in April, managed a career-best 0.9 WAR over 148 games in 2014, hitting .239/.286/.314 with five home runs and 12 stolen bases. The diminutive infielder also managed seven defensive runs saved at shortstop, tying him for the eighth-best mark at the position.
