Report: Marlins to host 2017 All-Star Game
The Midsummer Classic is coming to Miami.
Marlins Park will be the home of the 2017 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, according to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald.
It will mark the first time the event has ever been held in Miami and comes after a failed attempt to land the All-Star Game in 2015. The Marlins were supposed to host the event in 2000, but had it rescinded following the team's infamous firesale after capturing the 1997 World Series.
The All-Star Game will be held in Cincinnati in 2015 and San Diego the following year before the Marlins get center stage for the summer event.
Spencer said baseball officials are expected to make an announcement within the week. Both MLB and Marlins representatives declined to comment on the report.
Commissioner Ron Manfred recently said he would like to see the All-Star Game rewarded to cities through a bidding process, but that plan might have to wait, as former commissioner Bud Selig informed teams with recently built stadiums that they would have the chance to host the festivities.
"In getting these ballparks built, we made a lot of promises to cities about getting All-Star Games," Selig said at the owners' meetings, according to Spencer.
Marlins Park, a largely publicly funded stadium, opened in 2012.
Much-maligned Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria had a busy offseason after Miami posted its fifth consecutive losing season in 2014. Loria inked franchise cornerstone Giancarlo Stanton to a 13-year, $325-million deal – the richest contract in MLB history – in addition to trading for All-Star Dee Gordon and right-hander Mat Latos.
