Report: Hector Olivera likely to finalize deal by Wednesday
Hector Olivera appears likely to finalize a contract with an MLB club well before the weekend.
Aggressively courted by several clubs, the Cuban defector is expected to receive a deal between five and six years worth upwards of $50 million, and should decide on a new team by Wednesday, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
Though Olivera reportedly received a four-year offer from the Atlanta Braves and five-year offers from other clubs, there's a strong sense the 29-year-old will end up with either the Los Angeles Dodgers or San Diego Padres.
Olivera hit .316/.412/.474 over 273 plate appearances in his final season in Cuba's Serie Nacional, though he has a dubious medical history. The second baseman reportedly battled thrombosis, a blood disorder, in his left biceps during his tenure in Cuba, and sources told Yahoo's Jeff Passan earlier this month that Olivera could have a damaged ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
