Report: Dodgers 'very interested' in Cuban pitcher Yadier Alvarez
The Los Angeles Dodgers may be close to making another splash in the international market.
The club is very interested in Cuban right-hander Yadier Alvarez, reports CBS Sports' Jon Heyman.
Team president Andrew Friedman has personally scouted the 18-year-old hurler, who throws close to 100 mph. Alvarez has established residency in the Dominican Republic, where numerous teams are scouting him. Professional scouts believe the 6-foot-3, 175-pounder has the potential to be at least a No. 2 starter in the majors.
Here's a quick video of one of his recent throwing sessions to get you acquainted:
The Dodgers have a long track record of recruiting internationally, as evidenced by the six-year, $62.5-million contract they dished out to Cuban infielder Hector Olivera this season. Yasiel Puig and Hyun-Jin Ryu also joined the team as internationals in previous years.
