Clayton Kershaw earns 100th career win: 'I shaved. That's what did it'

Gary A. Vasquez / USA TODAY Sports

It took Clayton Kershaw five tries, but he finally got win No. 100.

The Los Angeles Dodgers' southpaw left the game in the seventh inning - after pitching a pristine six innings - having thrown 110 pitches and fanning 10 Colorado Rockies. Here's his line on what turned out to be a milestone night:

Player IP H R ER BB K
Kershaw 6.2 4 3 3 3 10

The win is only Kershaw's second of the season, and he improves to 2-2 on the year. His first win came against the Rockies on April 17. His ERA sits at an un-Kershaw-like 4.24, and he's got a 1.24 WHIP. He's struck out 66 batters in 51 innings.

Kershaw becomes the eighth pitcher since 1980 to win 100 games before turning 28.

Asked if he's been feeling pressure to meet the high standards he's set for himself, Kershaw, the 2014 National League MVP and back-to-back Cy Young Award winner, said:

The only thing I feel is responsibility to pitch as well as I possibly can for this team. They've made a pretty huge investment in me to do that. That’s the only thing I feel at times.

As for finally getting the big win after four unsuccessful attempts, Kershaw had it all figured out.

"I shaved," he said. "That's what did it."

Jimmy Rollins and Justin Turner combined for six hits and four RBIs on Friday night, and the Dodgers welcomed back Kenley Jansen, who struck out four batters in his 2015 debut inning of work. Rockies right fielder Carlos Gonzalez reached first base on a passed ball after he struck out to lead off the eighth, but Jansen wasn't fazed, throwing 13 of his 14 pitches for strikes.

Kershaw wasn't the only one making history Friday night, turns out.

The Dodgers are 23-12 with the win - and an impressive 16-4 at home - while the Rockies fall to 12-20.
