The Los Angeles Angels have agreed to terms with their first-round selection in this year's MLB draft, Taylor Ward.
The junior catcher out of Fresno State signed for less than the draft slot value of $2.034 million, according to multiple reports. He's expected to report to Class-A Orem.
One of the surprise picks in the first round, Ward possesses what many believe to be the best arm behind the plate.
Serving as the backup catcher on the U.S. collegiate national team, his offense is lagging behind his defense, though he should be able to grow in the minors.
Ward was publicly eager to play for the Angels and elected to take a signing-bonus cut. The club will use the money to sign high-school players.
