Mariners' Montgomery makes history in shutout against Royals
Mike Montgomery had a good day.
So good, in fact, that the rookie became the first lefty in Seattle Mariners history to throw a shutout with 10 strikeouts and zero walks. He did just that in 7-0 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.
The best part about this wasn't just the win, though. Montgomery dealt against the team that drafted him, dominant enough where he retired 17 straight batters at one point, while allowing only two base runners after the second inning.
The former first round pick of the 2008 draft was traded to Tampa Bay before landing on the west coast prior to the beginning of last season.
Montgomery's only trouble Tuesday came when he faced a bases loaded jam, which he got out of unscathed.
With three runs in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, Montgomery got all the support he needed, evening his record to 2-2 while lowering his ERA to a sparkling 2.09.
