Frazier beats Pederson to win Home Run Derby: 'Cincinnati we brought it home, baby'

Frank Victores / USA TODAY Sports

Todd Frazier took care of business in his own backyard.

The Cincinnati Reds third baseman out slugged Los Angeles Dodgers rookie Joc Pederson to take the final 15-14, claiming the 2015 Home Run Derby at Great American Ball Park.

"Cincinnati we brought it home, baby. It's about time," Frazier said on the field after accepting the trophy.

Down by three with one minute to go, Frazier tied Pederson at 14 with 10 seconds remaining in regulation and just missed a buzzer-beater with a warning track shot. The 29-year-old belted the game-winning bomb during bonus time to become the first player to win the Home Run Derby in his own ballpark since Ryne Sandberg in 1990.

"Big time impact," Frazier told reporters of the role the crowd played. "Just hearing the crowd roar, call my name, adrenaline. It was a lot of fun. I appreciate that a lot."

Frazier - who was pitched to by his older brother Jeff - defeated Prince Fielder and Josh Donaldson in the first two rounds. Though, he faced his stiffest test against 23-year-old Joc Pederson, who reached the final after eliminating Manny Machado and Albert Pujols.

Pederson went the first minute without a home run in the final round before hitting six straight en route to 14.

"Pretty crazy, really tired right now," Pederson said prior to Frazier's final at-bat. "It's a dream come true. Something you watch as a little kid and to be here is surreal.

"At least I am making him (Frazier) work for it."

Frazier lost in the final of last year's event to Yoenis Cespedes and entered the event homerless in his last 51 at-bats - the longest drought among any of the participants.

Organizers were forced to make some last-second adjustments to the Home Run Derby format as rain threatened the event earlier Monday. Players were given a four-minute running clock to hit as many home runs as possible. Participants were also awarded a 30-second bonus for hitting two home runs that exceeded 425 feet.
