Braves' Johnson: 'I want to be moved, and they want to move me'

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Chris Johnson is making it no secret that he hopes his time with the Atlanta Braves comes to an end soon.

"I've been called in the manager's office," Johnson told Mark Bowman of MLB.com. "(Manager Fredi Gonzalez) has told me they are trying to move me. I want to be moved, and they want to move me. Hopefully, something gets done."

Two years removed from hitting a career-high .321 average, the third baseman missed almost all of May with a fractured hand and has struggled to find playing time behind Juan Uribe since returning. When Johnson has been penciled into the lineup, he's failed to produce. Through 46 games, the 30-year-old is hitting .241/.282/.319 with one home run, six doubles, and 37 strikeouts.

"It's been a frustrating year," Johnson said. "From the beginning of the offseason, it's been really pretty clear that the team has no interest in getting me back to form or to give me regular playing time."

Johnson has two years and $16.4 million remaining on his deal after this season, meaning the Braves will likely have to either eat some of his contract or take back another bad deal in return. It was reported earlier this month that Atlanta tried to do just that in June, having discussed a swap for Cleveland Indians slugger Nick Swisher, before Swisher landed on the disabled list.

Though things have gone sour in Atlanta, Johnson believes he still has plenty to offer another organization.

"It's frustrating because I feel like I've done some pretty good things here in Atlanta," he said. "I took a little step back in 2014, but in 2013 I was pretty high up there in the National League in hitting.

"So, it just feels like that ship has kind of sailed and I'm kind of like an afterthought. I would love to help somebody out. I still have plenty of confidence. My confidence is sky high. I just want to get a chance."
