With first baseman Miguel Cabrera on the disabled list with a calf strain and outfielder Yoenis Cespedes dealt away to the New York Mets, Martinez is arguably the best hitter remaining in the Tigers' lineup.
Martinez is hitting .287/.347/.556 with 28 home runs and 68 RBIs in 424 plate appearances this season.
He was replaced in the game by Tyler Collins.
