ESPN removes Curt Schilling from LLWS assignment after 'unacceptable' tweet

Curt Schilling, the six-time All-Star and analyst for ESPN, drew the ire of both the internet and his employer after posting (and hastily deleting) an offensive tweet Tuesday that likened Muslim extremists to Nazis.

After deleting the tweet, the 48-year-old wrote in reply to an offended follower, "my apologies. didn't come across in any way as intended or interpreted." Schilling also added that Twitter "was not the forum to present it even if it was fact."

Schilling's apology didn't stop ESPN from taking him off coverage of the Little League World Series, however. The network issued a statement that categorically denounced the three-time World Series champion's tweet:

Curt's tweet was completely unacceptable, and in no way represents our company's perspective. We made that point very strongly to Curt and have removed him from his current Little League assignment pending further consideration.

Schilling, who owns an extensive collection of World War II and Nazi memorabilia, returned to the broadcast booth in September after missing most of the 2014 season as he battled oral cancer.
