VIDEO: Phillies bench coach Larry Bowa loses it after Mets attempt quick pitch

Even at 69 years old, Philadelphia Phillies bench coach Larry Bowa is still showing the same fire for the game that he had in his playing days.

Bowa was at the heart of the benches clearing Tuesday after he took exception with New York Mets reliever Hansel Robles delivering a quick pitch before Darin Ruf was ready.

"Larry just got a little bit aggravated because it happened two days in a row," Phillies interim manager Pete Mackanin told reporters. "Same pitcher. It's a legal play and there's nothing wrong with it. But the umpire's got to make sure that the batter is ready in the box because you can get hurt.

"Rupp just got his hand on the bat [Monday] and the pitch was on its way. So you've just got to be careful with it. Larry reacted."

Mets manager Terry Collins said he had no problems with the pitch and tried to calm Bowa, a former member of his coaching staff, to no avail.

"I saw a quick pitch and Larry went like Larry is," Collins said. "He's pretty intense. I just said until they make the pitch illegal, you can do it. I see it all the time."

Bowa was ejected as cooler heads prevailed, though the Phillies would go on to lose 6-5.
