MLB releases 2016 schedule; Opening Day set for April 4

Major League Baseball released the tentative schedule for the 2016 season on Tuesday, highlighted by a mix of interleague matchups and division rivalries on Opening Day.

The 2016 season begins with ESPN Sunday Night Baseball on April 3 - the matchup has yet to be announced - and will continue with 13 games scheduled for Opening Day on April 4, featuring the Cardinals and Pirates in Pittsburgh, and the Royals hosting the New York Mets in Kansas City.

Other notable dates on next year's schedule include the Atlanta Braves' final regular-season game at Turner Field, which is set for Sunday, Oct. 2 against the Detroit Tigers, and the All-Star Game in San Diego on Tuesday, July 12.

Jackie Robinson Day is scheduled for Friday, April 15, while the first day of the MLB draft will take place on Thursday, June 9.

San Diego will play at Toronto for the first time from July 25-27; the Padres-Blue Jays at Rogers Centre is the only site matchup that hasn't taken place since interleague play started in 1997.

The regular season is scheduled to end Oct. 2 with 12 games involving division rivals.
