Jonathan Papelbon is doing his part to help strike out cancer, with some of his former teammates in mind.
The Washington Nationals closer made a $50,000 donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, according to Dan Kolko of MASN. The gift was made in honor of Papelbon's former Boston Red Sox teammate Jon Lester, his former pitching coach in Boston and current Red Sox manager John Farrell, along with others.
Lester was diagnosed with anaplastic large cell lymphoma in 2006 and eventually made a full recovery. Farrell was diagnosed with lymphoma last month.
Papelbon spent seven seasons with the Red Sox.
