Familia records 6-out save to help Mets clinch series

Richard Mackson / USA TODAY Sports

There's only one word needed to describe Jeurys Familia's performance in the NLDS: perfect.

The 26-year-old retired the final six batters to end the Los Angeles Dodgers' season in Game 5 on Thursday night. It was the first six-out save in a New York Mets postseason game since Jesse Orosco finished off the Boston Red Sox in Game 7 of the 1986 World Series.

Familia retired all 16 batters he faced in the series, pitching 5 1/3 innings across four relief appearances.

Some found manager Terry Collins' decision to bring Familia in for the eighth inning curious after Noah Syndergaard entered in relief and pitched a perfect seventh inning, but the gamble paid off in the end.

The Mets will now face the Chicago Cubs in their first NLCS since 2006.
