Report: Royals to non-tender Greg Holland

Though Greg Holland has been an integral part of Kansas City's success over the last few seasons, the 29-year-old right-hander is unlikely to be back with the Royals in 2016.

Holland, the deposed closer who trails only Craig Kimbrel in saves over the last three years, is expected to be non-tendered this offseason, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, making him a free agent. The two-time All-Star will likely miss most (if not all) of 2016, though, after undergoing Tommy John surgery earlier this month.

Projected to earn roughly $11 million next year through salary arbitration, Holland struggled mightily during the second half of 2015 amid control problems and a significant decrease in velocity. In September, an MRI revealed a tear in his ulnar collateral ligament that prompted season-ending Tommy John.

Holland, a 10th-round pick in the 2007 draft, crafted a 3.83 ERA with a 1.46 WHIP in 48 appearances before undergoing the surgery, stumbling to career-worsts in strikeout rate (25.4 percent) and walk rate (13.5 percent). From 2011 to 2014, however, few relievers were as dominant as Holland, who authored a 1.86 ERA (220 ERA+) with a 35.2 percent strikeout rate over that span.
