The San Diego Padres agreed to a minor-league deal with veteran reliever Matt Thornton on Thursday, a source told Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Thornton is coming off a strong season with the Washington Nationals in which he posted a 2.18 ERA and 1.06 WHIP across 41 1/3 innings, striking out 23.

The 39-year-old left-hander owns a 2.61 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 120 2/3 innings with four different clubs over the past three seasons.

San Diego has spent the offseason reworking its bullpen, adding Fernando Rodney, Drew Pomeranz, Carlos Villanueva, Josh Martin, and Luis Perdomo.
