Nats' Arroyo: Rotator cuff, not labrum, is torn

Washington Nationals pitcher Bronson Arroyo told reporters Thursday he sustained a torn rotator cuff - and not a partially torn labrum, as was initially reported Wednesday - in his right shoulder.

The 39-year-old described the tear as "significant," according to MASN's Mark Zuckerman, before going on to say that while he's still waiting on previous MRI images to compare with his current ailment, he didn't sound optimistic about his future on the mound.

"We'll see if it might be something we could calm down and maybe try to rehab, but it's probably going to be a long shot at this point," Arroyo said. "We're just going to take a couple days to really look at it, let them analyze between the two comparisons and see if it's the end of the game for me or not."

Arroyo, who hasn't pitched in the majors since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2014, adamantly stated he won't be going under the knife to save his career this time.

"No surgery. It's either going to be rehab or retire, one or the other," he said. "And at this point, I really don't know."

Earlier Thursday, the Nationals said initial reports that Arroyo's injury was a partially torn labrum were "premature."
