Dickey 'undecided' about future
R.A. Dickey, who's now heading into his final season with the Toronto Blue Jays, has accomplished a lot throughout his improbable career, winning a Cy Young award and earning an All-Star nod in his late-30s after reinventing himself as a knuckleballer years prior.
Dickey, as a knuckleballer, isn't beholden to the traditional aging curve, but as of this moment, the 41-year-old and his family remain "kind of undecided" as to whether or not he'll come back for another season in 2017.
"We just like to stay in the moment," Dickey told John Lott of VICE Sports.
Should he decide to keep pitching, Dickey is confident there will be a market for his services. Though he hasn't been able to replicate the success he enjoyed in New York in Toronto, Dickey has thrown more innings since joining the Blue Jays in 2013 than all but four starters. His first season in Toronto was rough, but Dickey owns a a 3.81 ERA (101 ERA+) over the last two years. More importantly, though, he'll be only be looking for a one-year deal if he decides to play past 2016.
"I think I will be an attractive option for a lot of teams because I will not be requiring a multi-year deal, and I will probably be asking less than what my market value will be," Dickey said.
Dickey's optimism about his future options isn't misplaced, either. Not only did he fashion a 2.80 ERA after the All-Star break last season, but the knuckleballers he has credited for his success also pitched well beyond their age-41 seasons.
Ages 42-48
Name | WAR | IP | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
Phil Niekro | 12.5 | 1360 | 3.99 | 1.45 |
Charlie Hough | 3.9 | 912 | 4.21 | 1.36 |
Tim Wakefield | 3.1 | 424.1 | 5.03 | 1.38 |
"I'm not going to be holding people hostage for a million dollars here or there," Dickey said. "If you play above what your contract dictates that you will make, then you'll have a job for a long time. That was one of the first things Tim Wakefield told me. He said, 'Always outperform your contract and you'll always be attractive.' And for me, it's not necessarily about the money at this point. It's about the right fit, and how close to home I'd be, and are there direct flights, and what is the clubhouse policy for kids, all that stuff."
