NYCFC, Red Bulls trade Twitter blows ahead of Hudson River Derby
The New York Red Bulls take on New York City FC at Yankee Stadium on Saturday during Week 12 of the 2016 MLS season, otherwise known as Rivalry Week, and the two teams are already talking smack on Twitter.
Butter up the popcorn, because we've got some Hudson River Derby drama, folks. Here's how it started:
In the weeks building up to the derby fixture, the Red Bulls tagged many of their tweets with #NYisRED, often in conjunction with imagery tinted in vibrant shades of red.
That sort of propaganda didn't fly with the sky blue-clad NYCFC, who responded by purchasing the domain name NYisRed.com and redirecting it to their own official website.
The Red Bulls quickly trawled through the site to find the highlights from an early derby match in which NYCFC suffered a 2-0 loss at Red Bull Arena.
From there, NYCFC pointed out both teams' respective positions in the Eastern Conference table.
That's when the Red Bulls delivered one final blow.
