United States to play Ecuador in quarter-finals of Copa America
Ecuador is heading to the Copa America Centenario quarter-final stage after defeating Haiti 4-0 and securing a second-place finish in Group B.
Ecuador will now face the United States at CenturyLink Field in Seattle on Thursday, while the top team of Group B will be determined by the result of Brazil's match against Peru later in the evening; if Brazil wins or draws, Dunga's side finishes first, while a Peru win would secure a top spot for Los Incas and eliminate the Selecao from the competition.
La Tricolor put in a strong showing against Haiti at MetLife Stadium, with Enner Valencia opening the scoring early in the match and Jaime Ayovi doubling that lead 10 minutes later.
Christian Noboa and Antonio Valencia added a pair of goals in the second half, too, Noboa controlling the ball with his chest and firing home a volley just shy of the hour mark.
By the time Antonio Valencia scored the final goal, Haiti was well and truly beaten, with the Manchester United winger tapping home on an open net as Ecuador dismantled the CONCACAF side's meager back four.
Ecuador now moves on to the quarter-final round, a better result than the team managed one year ago in the 2015 Copa America when they were eliminated in Group A with a third-place finish, behind eventual winner Chile and surprise side Bolivia.
As a result, Ecuador now faces the host nation after the United States secured its berth in the knockout round with a top-spot finish in Group A following a 1-0 win over Paraguay.
