Toronto FC signs Sergio Camargo to Homegrown Player deal
Toronto FC strengthened its midfield core Wednesday by signing 22-year old Sergio Camargo to a Homegrown Player contract.
The 5-foot-7 Colombian and Canadian midfielder joined the Toronto FC Academy back in 2009 and split his playing time at university between Coastal Carolina and Syracuse. He appeared 58 times for the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, notching 19 goals and 15 assists during his time.
Camargo was born in Cucuta, Colombia, but he moved to Newmarket, Ontario as a child, and made his debut for the Canadian youth program in 2010 under coach Sean Fleming.
"We are very excited to sign Sergio, another Canadian homegrown player," TFC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said. "During his time in our academy, NCAA and PDL, Sergio has progressed and grown his game on a number of levels.
"We look forward to welcoming Sergio back to Toronto FC and watch his continued development as a professional soccer player."
The dual citizen already has some junior international experience under his belt, as he represented the Canadian men's national team at the U-17 and U-20 levels and participated in the 2011 U-17 World Cup in Mexico.
