Crew SC signs Cristian Martinez, Abuchi Obinwa
Columbus Crew SC announced Wednesday the acquisition of a pair of midfielders.
The club picked up Cristian Martinez on a permanent transfer from Chorillo FC after the Panamanian spent last season on loan with the club, and also signed Abuchi Obinwa, who once played for German outfit Hannover 96.
Martinez, 19, made five appearances for Crew SC last season, scoring one goal in June and becoming the youngest player to find the back of the net for the club in a regular-season match. He earned his first cap with Panama in February 2016, too.
Obinwa, 20, is a Columbus-born defensive midfielder who was once a member of Paris Saint-Germain's affiliate team in Chicago and joins his hometown club as a member of the U.S. Under-20 national team.
"We are excited to work with Abuchi and Cristian this year as they continue to develop as young players with potential," Crew SC head coach Gregg Berhalter said in the statement. "We look forward to tracking their progress in their first preseason camps with us."
