Watch: Van Damme issued erroneous red card on Guzman fall
Remember Baldomero Toledo?
You'd do well to forget him; the red card trigger-friendly referee has once again stirred controversy, giving Jelle Van Damme his marching orders for two fouls that video replays later showed were clear dives.
The LA Galaxy captain picked up a yellow card in the 31st minute for a questionable foul, then earned a second three minutes later when he and Portland Timbers newcomer David Guzman seemed to collide in midfield.
Only problem? The replays showed Van Damme didn't even touch Guzman, who tripped over his own foot on the way down to the ground.
An incensed Van Damme shook Toledo's hand as he exited the field, leaving the Galaxy with 10 men and a goal down at StubHub Center. Five minutes later, Guzman exited the match having injured his shoulder on the fall.
He was replaced by Ben Zemanski.
