Toronto FC signs Ben Spencer
Toronto FC announced Tuesday the signing of forward Ben Spencer to a senior-team contract out of its affiliate Toronto FC II side. The move came after the Reds acquired his Right of First Refusal along with his homegrown rights from Real Salt Lake last season.
Spencer, 22, made four appearances with TFC II this season and has represented the U.S. national team at the U-18, U-20, and U-23 levels.
"We are excited to sign Ben to the first team," Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a statement. "Ben has a variety of experiences playing internationally and representing the United States in multiple youth tournaments. We have no doubt he will be a welcomed addition to the team.”
The 6-foot-5 striker will compete with Jozy Altidore, Tosaint Ricketts, and Jordan Hamilton for a spot up top in Greg Vanney's side.
