MLS All-Star Game: Relive the action from Real Madrid's spot-kick triumph

* Real Madrid wins 4-2 on penalties
That's it until next year: It wasn't a classic. At some points it was very scrappy. But, ultimately, the MLS All-Stars went toe-to-toe with European behemoth Real Madrid and only penalties stood in the way of a famous win.
Goalscorer Borja Mayoral claimed the MVP award Wednesday night, although with better finishing from his Los Blancos colleagues, Real Madrid could've been out of sight before Dom Dwyer's scruffy 87th-minute equalizer.

Real Madrid wins the All-Star Game! Marcelo rolls in the winner. The Spanish giant was faultless from 12 yards and takes a 4-2 victory in the penalty shootout.
Chips the paint: Karim Benzema converted with ease, Giovani dos Santos strikes the crossbar. Gareth Bale then slotted his home, giving Real Madrid a 2-0 advantage after four spot kicks.
Save: First penalty is taken by Dom Dwyer, and is swatted away by Luca Zidane.
Final whistle: PENALTIES!
90 mins: Are we going to get penalties in an All-Star tilt for the first time since 2009?
87 mins: EQUALIZER! A Diego Valeri corner finds an unmarked Dax McCarty, but his header cannons back off the crossbar. It doesn't matter, as Dom Dwyer converts in the resulting scramble.

79 mins: The official attendance is 61,428.
75 mins: A couple of kids come on for Real Madrid (including Zinedine Zidane's son, Luca). By the end of the match, the visitor's lineup could share a similar demographic to those catching Lorde's Lollapalooza set tomorrow at nearby Grant Park.
70 mins: Ooof! Then the jinx of the commentator almost strikes as the Chicago Fire's Nemanja Nikolic shudders the side-netting.
68 mins: Only one team looks capable of scoring. Gareth Bale is denied by the woodwork after finding space behind the All-Stars backline.
62 mins: Gareth Bale isn't shy, and sends a quick smash over the crossbar.
61 mins: Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale, Marcelo, Casemiro, and Mateo Kovacic are all brought on by Zinedine Zidane.
59 mins: GOAL! Borja Mayoral takes advantage of a wonky MLS defensive line to tuck the ball beyond Stefan Frei. There was some miscommunication between Dax McCarty and Hernan Grana that allowed Los Blancos new boy Dani Ceballos to slide through his assist.

49 mins: A nod of appreciation for Atlanta United's Michael Parkhurst, who's the most experienced All-Star on the park. He was called on at the break for his fifth appearance at 33.
46 mins: The second period begins. There's been a lot of substitutions. Let's hope some of those introduced from the bench can shoot.
Half-time: The Loop is a 1.8-mile long circuit of elevated railroad that girdles the heart of downtown Chicago. It seems the old transit system has a tighter turning circle than some in Veljko Paunovic's midfield.
True, this is Real Madrid, arguably the toughest opposition in world soccer right now, but those supporting the All-Stars will want them to show less respect in the second stanza. With the exception of efforts from David Villa and Sebastian Giovinco, this affair has been dominated by Los Blancos.

45+1 mins: Sebastian Giovinco, wearing No. 5 like Zinedine Zidane in his Real Madrid pomp, laces a beautiful swerver from distance. That was close, and it would've been stunning.
41 mins: Sergio Ramos is surging up the pitch, and tries an impudent chip which lands on the roof of the net.
36 mins: David Villa comes close for the MLS All-Stars! Chances have been at a premium for the hosts, but the Spaniard almost feeds on the scraps after he expertly opens up his body and tries to beat Keylor Navas. The Costa Rican does well to turn it around his post.
35 mins: Sergio Ramos narrowly misses with a free-kick, and then Toni Kroos is even closer in open play. That's 10 shots from Real Madrid.
31 mins: Jozy Altidore is replaced by Ignacio Piatti for the MLS All-Stars.
28 mins: Real Madrid gets its clearest call for a penalty yet, but a corner is instead rewarded. DaMarcus Beasley is a lucky fella.
26 mins: Borja Mayoral has a ping at Tim Howard's goal. The MLS All-Stars may as well sit in the stands. They're spectators.
22 mins: Isco and Lucas Vazquez both have digs from distance, and Tim Howard thwarts a Marco Asensio effort. Real Madrid's midfield is slaloming through the MLS All-Stars, who look like they sunk a few slices of Giordano's deep dish pizza this afternoon.

16 mins: A couple of penalty shouts for Real Madrid so far. The appeals to referee Allen Chapman didn't hold great conviction.
10 mins: Now Graham Zusi introduces himself to Theo Hernandez in crunching fashion.
8 mins: DaMarcus Beasley comes on as an early replacement for Greg Garza, who injured his shoulder in a meaty collision in the opening exchanges.
5 mins: Real Madrid appear to be overloading the midfield, with Toni Kroos and Isco looking particularly dangerous.
1 min: And we've begun. A soggy Kaka takes the kick-off.
9:02 p.m. ET: Some fireworks and a fancy on-pitch display under the rain - but isn't bald irritant Pitbull contractually obliged to perform at every opening ceremony? Thank you, MLS, for bucking that trend.
8:55 p.m. ET: Kick-off is just moments away!
8:54 p.m. ET: Real Madrid fans proudly wearing Cristiano Ronaldo's No. 7 shirt will be disappointed with the confirmation that he's not in the matchday squad. There are plenty of other stellar names on the bench, though, including Gareth Bale, Luka Modric, Karim Benzema, and Marcelo.

8:31 p.m. ET: The MLS All-Stars have enjoyed some success in recent years. In the 2014 showpiece, Pep Guardiola and his Bayern Munich players were perturbed after some rough treatment and a 2-1 defeat in Portland, Oregon. In 2015, they overcame Tottenham Hotspur by a 2-1 scoreline in Colorado. Another 2-1 result went in Arsenal's favor in 2016, but Real Madrid should be wary of a stacked MLS team in the 2017 edition.
8:21 p.m. ET: Toronto FC is best represented from the first whistle for the MLS All-Stars with three starters:

8:05 p.m. ET: If you missed it, here's a match preview of what's to come at the home of the Chicago Bears.
7:45 p.m. ET: The hotly anticipated Real Madrid starting XI is finally out:

7:44 p.m. ET: It's here. European champion Real Madrid rolls into town to take on the MLS All-Stars, who are ably skippered by Bastian Schweinsteiger. Normally these MLS players are rivals, but tonight they aim to become the tightest ensemble in Chicago this side of the B.L.U.E.S. bar's hallowed doors on North Halsted Street.
