Toronto FC sets multiple records in professional dismissal of Montreal

Toronto FC stretched its lead atop the Eastern Conference to nine points after a comfortable 3-1 victory at the Montreal Impact on Sunday.

Two goals from Sebastian Giovinco and a Jozy Altidore tap-in also helped the 2016 MLS Cup finalist set a new franchise record of 16 wins and 56 points in the regular season. There are still seven matches left before the playoffs get underway.

Montreal had hopes of staging a comeback in injury time when Ignacio Piatti converted a well-struck effort from the edge of the area, but the home crowd was promptly hushed when Giovinco claimed a brace 43 seconds later.

Toronto is a strong favorite to win the MLS Cup following last year's disappointment, and is in blistering form at the business end of the 2017 campaign. Greg Vanney's side is unbeaten in nine matches, and will welcome the San Jose Earthquakes to BMO Field on Sept. 9 having not suffered a regular-season loss in its backyard since Oct. 1, 2016.
