Toronto FC's Altidore suspended additional game, out vs. Montreal
Toronto FC were dealt a big blow on Wednesday evening.
Major League Soccer announced that striker Jozy Altidore's suspension for violent conduct has been increased to two games, meaning he will miss his team's Rivalry Week clash with the neighboring Montreal Impact at BMO Field on Saturday.
The United States international was initially banned for just one game - Toronto's 1-1 draw at the San Jose Earthquakes last weekend - after he kicked out at New York City FC's Alexander Callens on Aug. 12.
The news means that Reds boss Greg Vanney won't be able to include Altidore in his starting XI for the heated matchup against Montreal, which could open the door for a home debut for summer signing Lucas Janson, who scored during his first TFC appearance in San Jose.
Meanwhile, reports had linked Altidore with a move to Europe this summer, but Vanney came out fighting this week, saying, "For me, t's not even a discussion."
The 28-year-old Altidore scored a hat-trick in his last appearance, a 5-2 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps that secured the Canadian Championship for Toronto.
