Montreal Impact sign Wanyama from Tottenham
The Montreal Impact completed a deal to sign midfielder Victor Wanyama from Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday, the club announced.
Montreal has added the Kenyan international as a Designated Player on a three-year contract after signing him on a free transfer.
Wanyama said he didn't hesitate to make the move across the pond after having a conversation with Thierry Henry, who was hired as Impact head coach in November.
"When I spoke with Thierry Henry and he told me he wanted me to join him in Montreal, I didn’t have to think twice," Wanyama said. "He has always been a player that I’ve admired, and I am really happy to get the opportunity to work with him and to play a part that can ensure that the Montreal Impact have an improved season and hopefully reach the ultimate stages of the competitions in which we compete."
Wanyama operates as a defensive midfielder and is known for his strength and tackling. He scored seven goals in 97 appearances across all competitions for Spurs after joining from Southampton in 2016.
Montreal emerged with a 2-1 home victory against the New England Revolution in its opening match of the Major League Soccer season last weekend.
