Orlando City into knockout round as group winners after draw vs. Union
Orlando City didn't make the playoffs in the first five years of their existence. But they're into the next round of the MLS is Back Tournament as group winners.
The Lions clinched first place in Group A on goal difference after Monday's 1-1 draw with the Philadelphia Union.
A tactical chess match for much of the evening, the match burst to life midway through the second half.
Union goalkeeper Andre Blake - who was stellar all night - produced a fantastic reaction save in the 67th minute to tip Antonio Carlos' header onto the crossbar and out. Philadelphia surged in confidence, running down the pitch a minute later to score the game's first goal.
Orlando responded just as quickly. Mauricio Pereyra nodded in Nani's excellent cross from the edge of the penalty area to equalize and ensure his side top honors.
Orlando will face one of the best third-place finishers in the round of 16 on July 25. Atlanta United are among the club's potential opponents.
Philadelphia, meanwhile, will clash with the runners-up from Group C: one of New England, D.C. United, or Toronto FC.
