Montreal Impact stay alive with slender win over D.C. United
The Montreal Impact are in a good position to advance to the round of 16 of the MLS is Back Tournament after their 1-0 win over D.C. United on Tuesday.
With three points and a minus-one goal differential, the Impact can qualify as one of the four best third-place finishers. They already have a better record than New York City FC, who have the same number of points but a worse goal differential.
Thierry Henry's side will have to wait a day or two to see where it stacks up against the rest of the tournament's potential wild cards.
D.C. United came into the match with a chance to top Group C but instead finished fourth. Defender Frederic Brillant deflected Saphir Taider's shot into his own goal in the 31st minute.
D.C. pushed for an equalizer in the second half, but Impact 'keeper Clement Diop stood tall, saving Kevin Paredes' snapshot from close range in the 58th minute.
Maximiliano Urruti missed an opportunity to double Montreal's advantage in the 68th minute when he hit the inside of the post with a sliding effort.
Toronto FC and the New England Revolution booked places in the next round with a scoreless draw earlier Tuesday. TFC claimed top spot thanks to a superior number of goals scored.
