Toronto FC goalkeeper Chris Konopka will miss the club's next match against the Philadelphia Union after picking up a one-game suspension from the MLS Disciplinary Committee on Wednesday.
The TFC 'keeper mistimed a tackle on New York City FC fullback Andoni Iraola in a 4-4 draw at Yankee Stadium on Sunday. The referee saw the incident and did not award a foul, but the MLS Disciplinary Committee handed out the suspension after the fact.
The tackle came in the 59th minute, as Iraola streaked into the box, and while referee Ted Unkel didn't see anything worth calling, replays show Konopka did come in a touch late.
But, in a game with a league-record four penalties and lots of physical play, the decision to suspend Konopka is strange, as it seemed the least offensive of the lot on the night.
Still, the Disciplinary Committee cited its ability to review evidence after the fact and hand out punishments accordingly, and said in a statement that Konopka's "action was serious foul play that endangered the safety of an opponent."
Konopka was also fined an undisclosed amount.
Goalkeeper Joe Bendik will most likely get the start for Toronto FC, who take on the Union on July 18 at BMO Field.
