VIDEO: Steven Gerrard scores in MLS debut for LA Galaxy
It was a dream start for one of the LA Galaxy's newest stars, Steven Gerrard, who notched a goal and an assist in his official league debut during a 5-2 victory in the California Clasico against the San Jose Earthquakes.
Gerrard, the former captain of Liverpool, found the back of the net in the 37th minute to make the score 2-2, hitting a sweet first-time shot off a low cross into the box, past the outstretched arms of San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham.

But that wasn't the only bit of business from the English footballing icon. Gerrard drew a penalty at the half-hour mark – which teammate Robbie Keane slotted home for the team's first goal – then found Keane with an assist off a low, driven free kick from the side of the box. the Galaxy's third goal of the match. Rounding it all off, Gerrard smacked the crossbar with a rocket shot off a 27-yard free kick, nearly adding a second goal on his debut.
“I felt like a kid out there today," Gerrard told reporters after the match. "I didn't want to come off. I want to play as much football as I can."
Gerrard nearly played the full 90 in his official league debut, coming off with two minutes left in the match. Earlier in the week, Gerrard put in 45 minutes against Mexican outfit Club America. At 35 years old, he's no spring chicken, but Gerrard says he's not ready to come off the bench, either.
"Bruce was shouting, 'How you doing?' from about 60 minutes but I pretended I couldn't hear him, just looking away," Gerrard said. "One of the reasons why I've come to this team was to start all the games and play as many minutes as possible. I was determined not to become a squad player. I feel like I've still got energy. I still love the game, I'm really enjoying training, I'm settling in pretty nicely. So, so far, so good.”
Not only has Gerrard settled in quickly, he's also reconnected almost immediately with Keane, his former Liverpool teammate, who scored a hat trick in the match.
“We had that chemistry in Liverpool,” Gerrard said. “When you play with good players, it's easy to connect. Robbie's on the wavelength, he's a very intelligent player, he's done it here for many years – you have witnessed that. He's the MVP."
“For me, it's quite easy to connect, because I know where he's going to be. We've got a great understanding. I'm sure that relationship is just going to get stronger. I think we add (Giovani) Dos Santos into the mix as well, we could have a formidable front line.”
So, it's as good a start as any for Gerrard, who now shares a debut goal with the LA Galaxy's first designated player, David Beckham. Both scored their first MLS goals against the San Jose Earthquakes at the StubHub Center.
