Seattle Sounders sign midfielder Andreas Ivanschitz from Levante
The Seattle Sounders have signed Austrian international Andreas Ivanschitz from Spanish outfit Levante, pending receipt of the player's P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate, the club announced Tuesday. Per league policy, terms of the move were not disclosed.
Ivanschitz, 31, joins Seattle after 15 years in Europe, including stints in Germany, Greece, and Austria, and the last two seasons in La Liga. He has 69 caps for the Austrian national team, scoring 12 goals in that time.
"Andreas is a skilled and dynamic player that has proven his abilities in some of Europe’s top domestic leagues and at the international level," club GM and president Garth Lagerwey said in a statement. "We’re excited to bring him to Seattle and help him integrate into our attack as we head toward the stretch run of our season."
Ivanschitz is expected to fill in behind Sounders duo Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins, and head coach Sigi Schmid will also look to utilize his free-kick ability.
"Andreas is a player who is creative in the attack and dangerous on set-pieces, and I’m looking forward to seeing what he can contribute to the group," Schmid said. "As we head into the final months of our season and begin CONCACAF Champions League play, we welcome Andreas’ experience and poise at this critical time of year."
