Steve Birnbaum's goal helps D.C. United tie Colorado Rapids
COMMERCE CITY - Steve Birnbaum scored a late goal to help D.C. United tie the Colorado Rapids 1-1 on Saturday night.
D.C. United (13-10-6) had lost a season-high three consecutive games, yet pulled even with the New York Red Bulls atop the Eastern Conference with 45 points. The Rapids (8-10-10) remain at the bottom of the Western Conference, one point back of Real Salt Lake and Houston.
Birnbaum scored on a header in the 87th minute off an assist from Fabian Espindola. Goalkeeper Clint Irwin blocked Birnbaum's shot to defender Drew Moor. Moor attempted to head the ball out of the goal, but the ball hit the crossbar and into the net.
Bobby Burling scored in the 28th minute for the Rapids. Burling stood outside the 18-yard box, kicked the ball past six players and just inside the right post.
