Columbus Crew clinch playoff berth with win over Toronto FC
The Columbus Crew are heading to the MLS postseason after Ethan Finlay and Federico Higuain scored against Toronto FC to give the Crew a 2-0 win at BMO Field.
With the win, the Crew also moved into second place in the Eastern Conference and now have 50 points, one more than Toronto. Columbus needed a win or a tie in order to qualify for the playoffs.
Finlay scored in the first half off a corner kick, tapping home on a fortunate ball after being left unmarked by Marky Delgado and Jackson.
Higuain added the second in extra time, pushing aside Josh Williams with a shoulder-to-shoulder challenge at the edge of the box before smacking home a shot past the fingers of Joe Bendik.
While Toronto FC already qualified for the playoffs, the Reds' silver lining in this game may come from the yellow card awarded to Crew forward Kei Kamara. Kamara and TFC star Sebastian Giovinco are tied for first in the MLS Golden Boot race with 22 goals each. The yellow card means Kamara is suspended for the Crew's last game of the season, giving Giovinco a golden opportunity to lock up the scoring title next week.
