North Carolina's stud defender Jonathan Campbell is heading to Toyota Park.
The Chicago Fire selected Campbell 12th overall after acquiring the 12th pick in a trade with the Colorado Rapids. But, Colorado had only just traded for this pick earlier in the day, sending targeted allocation money to the LA Galaxy for spot No. 12.
The Fire then traded its 15th and 33rd overall picks, as well as their position in the MLS allocation rankings (the system used to allocate teams to players returning to the league from abroad) in exchange for the Rapids' 12th and 22nd picks.
In Campbell, the Fire gain a defender who made a bit of history in his last year in North Carolina, being named both a first team All-American and Academic All-American. He scored one goal and recorded four assists in a three-man back line last season with North Carolina.
