Ferguson explains injury withdrawal: 'More trauma could be terminal'
As disappointing as it is to see yet another UFC main event derailed by injury, the outcome could have been far worse.
Tony Ferguson was scheduled to headline UFC on FOX 19 against Khabib Nurmagomedov on April 16, with the winner expected to become the No. 1 contender for the lightweight title, but a doctor discovered fluid and blood in Ferguson's lung, making it impossible for him to compete.
On Tuesday, Ferguson elaborated on his condition via Instagram:
"I am out of my fight due to blood/fluid in my lung," Ferguson wrote. "Usually I can power through these things. Doc said it wasn't wise to fight (because) any more trauma could be terminal."
Despite "El Cucuy" appearing to criticize Nurmagomedov's health issues, the Russian standout offered a sympathetic response to Ferguson's plight:
Cheer up @TonyFergusonXT , I know how you feel now. Wish you fast recovery. #ufcTampa

The promotion is searching for a replacement to face Nurmagomedov, with Donald Cerrone and BJ Penn offering to take the fight.
