A pioneer of women's MMA, 35-year-old Marloes Coenen was the biggest favorite on Friday's Bellator 155 card in Boise, Idaho.
After a good start that saw her take the match to the ground where she is most comfortable, the Dutchwoman was trapped in a triangle choke by Alexis Dufresne that caused her to tap out in the first round.
It was a stunning end for Coenen, a highly respected grappler with 17 submissions of her own in MMA competition. The disappointment was etched on her face afterwards:
A former UFC fighter, Dufresne improved her MMA record to 6-2, with what was unquestionably the biggest win of her young career.
